Emergencies Happen – Be Prepared

 

  • We all tend to think of emergencies as something that happen to other people. The fact is, that at some point, most homeowners and renters will experience an emergency. This could be a simple power outage, or something as serious as a gas leak. 
  • Some emergencies require immediate action. Make sure every member of the family - even school-age children - understands the importance of following proper emergency procedures. 
  • Children should be taught: When in doubt, leave the house. Always go to a neighbor's house to ask for help or call 911 for emergency assistance.

 Gas Leaks 

  • If you believe you have a serious gas leak, your first call should be 911 from a safe location.

Water Emergencies

  • It is advisable to know the location of your private shut-off valve in the home, in case of water emergencies.
  • If you have a broken water pipe, either underground or in the home, and need your water service stopped, please call: 
    • Village Hall at 815-624-7600 (Option 1) or Public Works at 815-624-2800 during normal business hours.
    • Our emergency answering service at 1-866-598-3484 during after hours.

 

Sewer Backups

  • It is advisable to contact the Public Works Department first in the event of a sewer backup, as we will come out free of charge to determine the nature of the issue.
  • The Village owns the main sewer lines and will clear any obstructions causing backup. We will recommend you call a plumbing service if we determine the blockage is in any private connection or lateral.
