| Rockton has an excellent educational system for all students. Rockton School District #140 was formed in 1975 by the consolidation of the Stephen Mack School District and Rockton Elementary District. It covers 50 square miles and has an enrollment of 1,600 at three schools: Stephen Mack Middle School, the Whitman Post Elementary School, and Rockton Grade School. Students from Rockton, Roscoe, Shirland and part of South Beloit attend Hononegah Community High School #207, where outstanding academic quality is a tradition. Students’ cumulative A.C.T. (American College Testing) scores consistently rank among the top percentiles in the Northern Illinois Conference. The HHS academic program is anchored in the basics with an emphasis on advanced placement courses for college-bound students and vocational training for those entering the workplace immediately after graduation. Most students take part in one or more of the school’s many extracurricular programs. The Talcott Free Library, located on Main Street in Rockton, opens the door to knowledge for patrons of all ages. As part of the Northern Illinois Library System, Talcott has access to the collections of many other libraries in the region. The library’s own collection holds more than 67,000 books, 2,000 videos, 600 CDs and subscriptions to over 400 periodicals. Available services include children’s computer learning centers, Internet access and word processing. Photocopying and fax services are also available for nominal fees.
